Huppa (Wedding Canope) in the Hurva Synagogue.
|
The Hurva Synagogue as well as the adjacent Menachim Zion was part of a neighborhood dating back to the eighteenth century.
It was named after Rabbi Yehuda HaHassid, a saintly mystic who made Aliyah from Poland in 1700 with his disciples. He died within days of his arrival in Jerusalem. The entire neighborhood was burned down in 1720. And since this time has been nick-named the "Hurva:". Hurva means "Ruin". By this name it was been known ever since. Even after it was rebuilt in the mid-ninteenth century . This rebuilding brought it to the massive height of twenty four meters. This magnificent building was destroyed by the Arab Legion in 1948. |
