Havdala

Havdala is a ceremony which observant Jews follow at the end of the Sabbath.

At the beginning of the Sabbath there is a candle lighting and a blessing over wine. And as the Sabbath leaves there is another ceremony marking this passing.

All the senses are used to remind us that there is a distinct difference between light and dark,
the Holy and the mundane, the Sabbath and the rest of the week.

A blessing is made over a cup of wine or other suitable beverage.

A pleasant scent, usually spices like cloves or cinnamon, is passed around for everyone to enjoy it's fragrance.

A multiwick candle is used to make a torch. With this we feel the warmth and see a clear contrast between the light and dark in it's shadows as we hold our fingers to make reflections and shadows.

The root of the word Havdala is hevdale which means difference.
