JERUSALEM IS ...
by Melvyn Millman

Jerusalem is where you find God
	around every corner
And history on the soles of your shoes;

Where you feel a bit holier for picking up
	a black-clad bearded scholor
And a lot angrier watching him riot on TV.

Jerusalem is roaming about under the sunlight
	of a two-thousand-year-old dream
An barely surviving a bureaucratic nightmare;

Where world renowned personalities
	shop in your supermarket
And no one in the place seems to care.

Jerusalem is watching yourself
	crossing the street
while the whole world is watching you;

Where the ghosts of King David's warriors
	creak in your walls at night
And you wake up to the smell of fried eggs.

Jerusalem is a beautiful quiet lady
	who goes to sleep early
And wears three different nightgowns to bed;

Where the enemy sits next to you
	on the Egged bus
And you give his aged mother your seat.
